Original Research Study

An original study, conducted and written by researchers, that presents important new findings that can potentially impact professional practice and add to the current body of knowledge on that topic. 

Systematic Review/Meta-Analysis

A systematic review is a study that identifies, appraises, and synthesizes all relevant research on a particular topic using a detailed and systematic process. A meta-analysis involves using statistical techniques to synthesize data from several studies to develop a single quantitative estimate or summary of effect size. Systematic reviews may include a meta-analysis portion to further quantify the study results.  

Case Study / Case Series

A case study or case series provide detailed reports on a specific subject or subjects. These studies often include in-depth descriptive information regarding the subjects, problem, intervention(s), outcomes, and final results.

Critically Appraised Topic

A Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) is a short summary of available evidence on a specific question. These studies are a shorter, less rigorous type of a systematic review and summarize the current best evidence on a topic. 

Narrative Review

A clinical commentary or current concepts review that provide a descriptive professional discussion on a relevant topic to fitness, wellness, human performance, and health.

Technical Note/Tips from the Field

The Technical Note and Tips from the Field present a novel topic related to fitness, wellness, health, and human performance in a brief format.
